Plant-Fungal Pathogen Interaction

Global climate change is arguably one of the biggest threats of modern times and has already led to a wide range of impacts on the environment, economy, and society. Owing to past emissions and climate system inertia, global climate change is predicted to continue for decades even if anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions were to stop immediately. Expected heat and drought periods followed by floods, and unpredictable growing seasons, are predicted to have detrimental effects on agricultural production systems, causing immense economic losses and food supply problems. To mitigate the risks of climate change, agricultural innovations counteracting these effects need to be embraced and accelerated. To achieve maximum improvement, the required agricultural innovations should not focus only on crops but rather pursue a holistic approach including the entire ecosystem. Over millions of years, plants have evolved in close association with other organisms, particularly soil microbes that have shaped their evolution and contemporary ecology. Many studies have already highlighted beneficial interactions among plants and the communities of microorganisms with which they coexist.

Plant pathology also phytopathology is the scientific study of diseases in plants caused by pathogens infectious organisms and environmental conditions physiological factors. Not included are ectoparasites like insects , mites , vertebrate , or other pests that affect plant health by eating of plant tissues. Plant pathology also involves the study of pathogen identification, disease etiology, disease cycles, economic impact, plant disease epidemiology , plant disease resistance , how plant diseases affect humans and animals, pathosystem genetics, and management of plant diseases. Control of plant diseases is crucial to the reliable production of food, and it provides significant problems in agricultural use of land, water, fuel and other inputs. Plants in both natural and cultivated populations carry inherent disease resistance, but there are numerous examples of devastating plant disease impacts such as the Great Famine of Ireland and chestnut blight , as well as recurrent severe plant diseases like rice blast , soybean cyst nematode , and citrus canker. However, disease control is reasonably successful for most crops. Disease control is achieved by use of plants that have been bred for good resistance to many diseases, and by plant cultivation approaches such as crop rotation , use of pathogen-free seed, appropriate planting date and plant density , control of field moisture, and pesticide use.

It publishes original research papers and reviews, covering all aspects of Microbiology. The journal has a severe policy of manuscript evaluation, and each manuscript is evaluated carefully by at least two selected referees. The Impact Factor measures the average number of citations received in a particular year by papers published in the journal during the two receding years. CiteScore measures average citations received per document published. Read more. SRJ is a prestige metric based on the idea that not all citations are the same. SJR uses a similar algorithm as the Google page rank; it provides a quantitative and qualitative measure of the journal's impact.

A study published by the National Academy of Sciences NAS described six general principles for plant disease control: avoidance, exclusion, eradication, protection, disease resistance, and therapy. In practice, the most widely used and effective measures for controlling xylem-localized plant pathogenic bacteria are exclusion, as in the use of uninfected propagative materials for control of the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum , or host plant disease resistance conferred, for example, by the use of major genes for resistance to control bacterial blight of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. That limited repertoire does not preclude the development of effective control approaches that use other principles, but the development of novel strategies or the rational application of existing disease management strategies does require understanding how, when, and where disease develops and spreads. This chapter details the current understanding of how Xf and grape plants interact to result in PD, and it identifies the information needed to develop effective management strategies to interfere with that interaction.

The plant secretome is usually considered in the frame of proteomics, aiming at characterizing extracellular proteins, their biological roles and the mechanisms accounting for their secretion in the extracellular space. In this review, we aim to highlight recent results pertaining to secretion through the conventional and unconventional protein secretion pathways notably those involving plant exosomes or extracellular vesicles. Furthermore, plants are well known to actively secrete a large array of different molecules from polymers e. ATP, phytochemicals, secondary metabolites, phytohormones.
