Round 6: The Science vs. Round 4: Restraints are not appropriate to use regardless of the severity of the behavior. Round 3: Behavior analysts should not accept gifts because it creates a dual relationship. Published on: November 5, at PM. DOI: The speed with which a functional analysis FA provides a convincing demonstration of the variables that influence problem behavior may be termed efficiency. We attempted to illustrate an alternative efficient process for conducting FAs of problem behavior that relied on modifying those core components.

COMPARISONS OF SYNTHESIZED AND INDIVIDUAL REINFORCEMENT CONTINGENCIES DURING FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS

In a world where it is becoming more and more difficult to identify unbiased statements, we want to provide listeners with a clearly stated topic that is explained and supported by well researched input from opposing viewpoints. Since May of , our podcast, ABA Ultimate Showdown, has been promoting constructive, respectful, and professional discourse to advance the field of behavior analysis. To date, topics have covered the ethics of gift giving, when to include parents in the implementation of a behavior intervention plan, the use of restraint, and most recently the supervision system. In our preparations to produce these podcasts, we researched different frameworks in the field of speech and debate in order to develop a modified format that we feel can have widespread use, from conferences to college classrooms. One important modification is that there is no winner, nor is there a loser in these debates.

Hanley, Jin, Vanselow, and Hanratty introduced a marked departure from this practice, using an interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis IISCA. In the test condition, they delivered multiple contingencies simultaneously e. In the current investigation, we compared the results of IISCA with a more traditional FA in which we evaluated each putative reinforcer individually. Four of 5 participants displayed destructive behavior that was sensitive to the individual contingencies evaluated in the traditional FA. By contrast, none of the participants showed a response pattern consistent with the assumption of the IISCA.

The functional analysis FA methodology was developed to provide an empirical basis for understanding the reinforcers contributing to the maintenance of problem behavior. Previous research has demonstrated that multiple formats have been established to address some areas, such as practicality, efficiency, and safety. We reviewed the research on a new replication and extension of the standard FA format, the interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis IISCA and its subsequent treatment. We discuss the efficiency and effectiveness of the IISCA across various populations, settings, topographies of problem behaviors, and maintaining functions across 17 studies. Common treatment trends, novel developments, and other critical intervention components are also reviewed. We provide suggestions for future directions and guidelines for practitioners when considering the use of the IISCA. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access.

In general, functional analyses rely on direct observation of problem behavior PB under various conditions in which environmental events are systematically manipulated to detect their influence on PB. FAs are commonly applied in research prior to treating PBs primarily associated with autism and intellectual disabilities e. FAs have been shown to positively moderate the effects of behavioral interventions Campbell

The results of the traditional FA show that the EO and contingency for tangible positive reinforcement evoked and maintained problem behavior, whereas the results of the IISCA show no additional effect (i.e., no interaction effect) of synthesizing tangible positive reinforcement with an escape contingency and.
