Static IP address vs. dynamic IP address: Which is better for business?

An IP address is an address assigned to a device on the Internet. It is analogous to postal address where a letter is delivered, and an IP address is computer's address where internet traffic is delivered. If you need to setup a web server or an email service, you'll need a static IP address. If you are just browsing an Internet, you may just get by with a dynamic IP address. A static IP address is an address that is permanently assigned to you by your ISP as long as your contract is in good standing , and does not change even if your computer reboots.

A static IP address is usually assigned to a server hosting websites, and providing email, database and FTP services. A static IP address is also assigned to a commercial leased line, or public organization requiring same IP address each and every time. Since static IP address is assigned to you, you'll have to manually configure your machine router or server to use the static IP address assigned to you.

Since your ISP dynamically assigns an IP address to a computing device on reboot, your device may not always receive the same IP address previous assigned to it. Even if your machine is always on and permanently connected, some ISPs do change IP address on-the-fly even though this is very rare.

A sticky nature of DHCP generally reassigns same IP address to the same machine, it is not guaranteed to receive same IP address as IP pool may exhaust at times and lease time may expire. Difference Between Static and Dynamic IP address

The static IP address is fixed IP address which is manually assigned to a device for a long period of time. An Internet Protocol IP address is a unique numerical identifier assigned to each device on a network to identify each connection uniquely. It encodes the network number and host number of the hosts and routers connected to the network. The IPv4 addresses are 32 bits long and are used in the source and destination address of IP packets. An IP address is not necessarily referred to a host instead it refers to a network interface, so if a user is on two networks, it must have two IP addresses.

There are two kinds of IP addresses: static and dynamic. This article examines the key features of static and dynamic IP addresses, so you can make a better decision about which one to use. Just like your physical home address lets people know where to send your birthday card, IP addresses identify computers and devices and lets them communicate with each other. Internally, IP addresses are stored as numbers.

Everyone connected to the LAN is in the same physical location. They follow a pattern as follows:. These addresses are only visible inside a network, between devices, and are considered private from outside networks. There are potentially millions of locations that might have the same pool of internal IP addresses as your business.

The main difference between static and dynamic IP address is that the static IP address is a fixed address assigned to a device manually by a network administrator while the dynamic IP address is an address assigned to a device automatically by a DHCP server. A computer network consists of various devices such as desktops, laptops, servers , routers , and, switches to share data and resources. These devices are connected together using wired or wireless medium. Each device in the network has an address to recognize it. The IP address helps the devices in the network to communicate with each other.

It is provided by ISP(Internet Service Provider). While it is provided by DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Static ip address does not change any time, it means if a static ip address is provided then it can't be changed or modified. While dynamic ip address change any time.
